Brewing news The Czech Republic: Beer production drops by 0.7%, malt output up 0.5% in 2017

After five years of growth, Czech beer production dropped last year by 0.7 percent to 20.32 million hectolitres. Sales in the Czech Republic declined by 2.1 percent to 16.04 million hectolitres. Czech beer consumption dropped last year by five litres per person, reaching 138 litres per person, the Devdiscource reported on April 17.

On the other hand, the export of local beer was up, increasing by 4.5 percent to 4.6 mln hl, the Czech Brewery and Malt Association said at a press-conference.

The decline in output is mainly explained by stricter state regulations, such as the anti-smoking bill, which banned smoking in restaurants last year.

"From our point of view, this is not a very successful year, and the bad results of the past year are largely due to regulation and excessive bureaucracy, which complicates entrepreneurship and impinges on Czech beer culture,” said Frantisek Šamal, Chairman of the Association’s Board of Directors.

Last year, Czech malt production grew by 0.5 percent to 546,500 tonnes. Czech maltsters exported 236,995 tonnes, which was a year-on-year decrease of 11.5 percent. Traditionally the most important buyers of Czech malt are Poland and Germany. However, the Association said exports to Austria and Japan showed the highest year-on-year growth, while exports fell mainly to neighbouring Poland, Hungary, and – surprisingly - to the UK.

Czech malt is exported to 51 countries. The Czech Republic is the fifth largest producer of malt in the EU.

The Association brings together 26 brewing companies, six malt and 19 contributing members, such as hop growers and beer glass manufacturers. The largest Czech breweries are Plzeňský Prazdroj, Staropramen Brewery, Heineken ČR, and Budweiser Budvar National Company.
